		<description>DESIGN CONCEPT
The house is anchored to its steep, wooded slope by a thick stone accent wall that forms an “L” shape on the site. The living spaces on both levels are separated from the circulation by this wall, which is punctured in various locations to allow one to either pass through or to catch a glimpse of the rooms beyond. The wall is seen “passing through” the ends of the house and onward into the landscape by the use of glass butting up to it, blurring somewhat the transition from indoor to outdoor space.

INTERIOR FEATURES
The main rooms are generous in size. The kitchen/breakfast/family room combination is separated from the dining room and adjacent living room with it’s huge stone fireplace, by a large butler’s pantry which has steps down to a wine cellar. The main level is terminated by a guest suite. The library, clad in the same thick stone that forms the accent wall, is located in the bend of the “L” and acts as a knuckle, connecting the two wings while separating the formal spaces from the more informal ones. Ceilings on the main level are vaulted, supported by heavy wood beams which appear to vanish into the stone wall. The accent wall also extends down to the lower level separating the bedrooms from the circulation and support spaces, such as the bathrooms and the laundry area.

EXTERIOR FEATURES
The garage, one level up from the rest of the house, forms a courtyard with the “L” of the main house. This courtyard serves as both an entry courtyard as well as an extension of the informal family spaces; the playroom below the garage and the sunroom off the great room both open to it. Decks off the major rooms also serve to bring the outdoors closer to the interior spaces.

		<description>DESIGN CONCEPT
This house is designed for a steep lot with panoramic views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. The massing of the house is a modern interpretation of a Greek hillside town with stacked boxlike forms arranged at two merging angles stepping up the steep hill. This approach reduces the apparent bulk of the house so it does not appear to loom over the street or the neighbors and it also allows the house to fit in the narrow lot without sitting directly on the property line for its entire length. A couple of tall concrete walls slice through the house running from the exterior through the interior and back outside again, linking the house to the site. All four levels are connected by a concrete-clad stair tower punched with deep, recessed windows.

INTERIOR FEATURES
The plan consists of a mostly-subterranean garage level topped by the bedroom/entry level. One floor above is the main living level with its high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows to take advantage of the views. It is pushed back on the site so as to allow for an expansive roof terrace on top of the bedrooms. The master suite occupies the top floor taking advantage of the views as well as allowing for access to the back yard.

EXTERIOR FEATURES
The primary exterior finish for the cubic forms stepping up the hill is smooth white stucco. The concrete walls that bisect the house in two areas are accented by grid lines and exposed tie holes. The windows are black metal storefront windows and the railings and gutters are a dull metal. The retaining walls throughout the site are a similar concrete to the bisecting accent walls.

		<description>DESIGN CONCEPT
The modest-sized house sits at the edge of a steep slope that drops down sharply from street level. The small size of the property necessitates a compact design that maximizes the spaces within. Off-street parking is accommodated on a roof deck and adjacent steps lead to the entry level one floor below. The interior stairs are seen as a thin tower-like spine running the length of the house. The rest of the house “leans” up against this element which provides a measure of visual stability.

INTERIOR FEATURES
Due to the slope of the property the entry space leads directly to the stairs leading down to the main living level consisting of a great room (family/breakfast/kitchen), a study and a powder room. There are two bedrooms, two baths and a laundry room on the level below. Despite the compact design the rooms are relatively generous in size.

EXTERIOR FEATURES
The exterior finishes are mainly horizontal wood siding with stucco accents all atop a heavy-looking concrete base visually anchoring the house to the ground. The simple geometric forms are punctuated by recesses and bump-outs visually supported by brackets and the simple roofline is broken by shed dormers over the large expanses of glass. Brackets also support the roof eaves of the stair spine and a ridge skylight over the stair allows light to filter down into the house.
